Overview

edge-tts calls Microsoft Edge's online text-to-speech service from Python code or through the `edge-tts` and `edge-playback` commands. It writes audio and optional SRT subtitles, lets you pick a voice with `--list-voices` and `--voice`, and adjusts rate, volume and pitch. Synthesis runs on Microsoft's servers, so it needs network access and is not a local model.

Who it is for: Developers who want quick cloud TTS with subtitles from Python or a shell

Strengths

  • Installs with pip or pipx; the README mentions no API key
  • Writes audio and SRT subtitles in a single command
  • Many voices across languages, listed with --list-voices
  • Usable as a Python module; used by hass-edge-tts and Podcastfy

Weaknesses

  • Depends on Microsoft's online service; not offline or local
  • Custom SSML removed; service allows only one voice and prosody tag
  • edge-playback needs the mpv player except on Windows
  • License is reported as NOASSERTION, so terms need checking

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Microsoft Edge online TTS service, mpv (edge-playback, non-Windows)
  • Models: Microsoft Edge neural voices (hosted)

Quick answers

Is edge-tts open source?

Its code is public on GitHub under its own license terms; read them before you use it at work.

Does edge-tts need a GPU?

No, it runs without one.
