Overview
DeepFace wraps face recognition models (VGG-Face, FaceNet, ArcFace, Dlib, SFace, GhostFaceNet, Buffalo_L) and about 20 detector backends behind single calls such as verify, find, analyze and represent. It also covers age, gender, emotion and race prediction, anti-spoofing, webcam streaming, and registering embeddings in databases such as Postgres, Mongo, Pinecone or Milvus. A gunicorn-based REST API ships in the repo.
Who it is for: Python developers adding face recognition or facial analysis to apps
Strengths
- One-line calls cover detect, align, represent and verify; model and detector swap by argument
- Database-backed register, identify and search with ANN support across many vector and SQL stores
- Runs on onnxruntime by default; TensorFlow or PyTorch available as install extras
- Anti-spoofing, webcam streaming and a REST API are included in the same repo
Weaknesses
- Built-in race and ethnicity prediction carries bias and misuse concerns
- Defaults are VGG-Face and the OpenCV detector, which the README does not rank as most accurate
- Browser UI is a separate repository (deepface-react-ui)
- RAM and GPU requirements are not stated in the README
What it needs
- GPU optional
- Docker + Compose
- Needs onnxruntime, TensorFlow (optional), PyTorch (optional), Postgres, Mongo or other vector DB (optional)
- Models: VGG-Face, Facenet, Facenet512, OpenFace, DeepFace
