Overview
Stanford CoreNLP is a Java library that takes raw text and produces lemmas, parts of speech, named entities, normalized dates and quantities, constituency and dependency parses, and coreference chains. It combines rule-based, probabilistic and deep learning components in one pipeline. English is the main language, with varying support for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hungarian, Italian and Spanish.
Who it is for: Java developers and researchers needing classical NLP annotations
Strengths
- One pipeline runs tokenizing, tagging, NER, parsing and coreference from two lines of code
- Published on Maven Central; builds with Ant or Maven, and Gradle dependency snippets are given
- Model jars for nine languages, also hosted on Hugging Face Hub
- Active: release on 2026-09-25 and long-established use in academia and industry
Weaknesses
- GPL license rules out use in proprietary software you distribute
- Models ship as separate jars; the shift-reduce parser and WikiDict need extra English downloads
- Non-English support is uneven; README only says 'varying levels'
- README gives no memory or hardware requirements
What it needs
- Needs Java, Ant or Maven, CoreNLP model jars
- Models: Stanford CoreNLP model jars, Arabic, Chinese, English, French
Quick answers
