Overview

ChatterBot is a Python library that builds a conversational engine from collections of known conversations. It stores each input and the statement it responded to, then replies by finding the closest known statement and returning the most frequent response to it. It ships training corpora for over a dozen languages and installs with pip.

Who it is for: Python developers building simple chatbots without an LLM

Strengths

  • Installs with pip; a basic bot takes a few lines of Python
  • Bundled corpus training data for over a dozen languages
  • Language-independent design, trainable on custom conversation data
  • BSD-3-Clause license; last release 2026-08-25

Weaknesses

  • Replies come from matching past statements, not an LLM; no generative output
  • Untrained bot has no knowledge; quality depends on training data volume
  • README mentions no tool calling or LLM provider integration
  • No web UI or server included; README shows library usage only

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Models: ChatterBot corpus training data
