Overview

Serverpod is an app and web server written in Dart for Flutter projects. It generates client code and models by analyzing the server's endpoints, and includes an ORM, database migrations, caching, authentication, file uploads, streaming and scheduled future calls. Terraform scripts cover deployment to Google Cloud Platform and AWS.

Who it is for: Flutter developers who want a Dart backend with generated APIs

Strengths

  • Generates typed client code and models from server endpoints, so remote calls look like local methods
  • Built-in ORM with Dart types and null-safety, plus a database migration system
  • Distributed cache (local or Redis), authenticated socket streaming and persistent future calls
  • Terraform scripts for Google Cloud Platform and AWS

Weaknesses

  • Main serverpod package is SSPL, not BSD-3; other packages are BSD-3
  • Server code must be written in Dart, which limits it mostly to Flutter teams
  • Built-in web server is described as experimental
  • Listed auth providers are Google, Apple, Firebase and email; others need custom work

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Docker
  • Needs Database, Redis (optional, for shared cache)
