Overview

Apache Maka (Incubating) is an Electron desktop app, TUI and CLI that run a coding agent against your own model. Every message, tool call and permission decision is stored as an append-only RuntimeEvent in local SQLite. Desktop, TUI, CLI and the eval package are clients of one Runtime Host, and the repo publishes benchmark runs with per-task results. Written in TypeScript; latest Apache release is 0.2.0.

Who it is for: Engineers who want a local, auditable coding agent with their own model

Strengths

  • Every model message, tool call and permission decision is kept in an append-only event log
  • Sessions, settings and run records stay local; models can be cloud API, local or gateway
  • Per-task benchmark results against other harnesses are published in docs/eval
  • One Runtime Host serves Desktop, TUI and CLI, with an MCP client and sandboxed file and shell tools

Weaknesses

  • Windows and Linux builds are previews; macOS is the main platform
  • API keys are kept in a plaintext local file, readable only by your OS account
  • Incubating project; data formats and CLI commands may still change
  • Older JSONL transcripts and safeStorage credentials are not imported after upgrade

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js 22.19+ or 24+, npm, Git, ripgrep, Rust 1.98+ (only for peer builds)
  • Models: cloud APIs, local models, compatible gateways
