Overview

Git AI is a Rust git extension that stores line-level AI attribution in Git Notes, linking each AI-written line to the agent, model and session. Coding agents report their edits through `git-ai checkpoint`, so no heuristics are used. It adds `git ai blame` and `git ai stats`, and carries attribution through rebase, squash, stash and cherry-pick.

Who it is for: Teams using coding agents who want per-line AI attribution in git history

Strengths

  • No git hooks and no git wrapping, so git commands are not slowed
  • Attribution comes from agent reports, not AI-detection heuristics
  • Preserves attribution across rebase, cherry-pick, stash, squash and amend
  • Works locally and offline with no login; editor plugins exist for VS Code and Emacs

Weaknesses

  • `git mv`, `git filter-branch`/`filter-repo` and `git replace` are not tracked
  • Squash/rebase merges on hosting platforms need CI Actions or the paid Teams product
  • Secure prompt store and org-wide stats are in the Teams version, not the CLI
  • Bash-created files may be missed if the agent is not run from the repo root

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs git
  • Models: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode
