Overview
MCP server that gives agents Exa's web search and page fetching, with the page content returned as clean markdown. It is mainly used as the hosted endpoint at mcp.exa.ai/mcp, and the repo also ships as an Agent Plugin with two skills (search, exa-agent). Optional tools add advanced filtered search and multi-step Exa Agent runs.
Who it is for: Developers adding web search and page fetching to MCP-capable coding agents
Strengths
- Hosted endpoint works anonymously, so no local install is needed to try it
- Default tools are only web_search_exa and web_fetch_exa, so the tool surface stays small
- Supports OAuth, API key in URL, Bearer header or x-api-key header
- Install links or config notes for about a dozen clients, including Cursor, VS Code, Claude and Codex
Weaknesses
- Depends on Exa's hosted service and API; anonymous use is rate limited
- Exa Agent (agent_run) requires OAuth or an API key
- Setting the tools parameter replaces the defaults, so you must list all wanted tools
- README does not describe self-hosting or the Docker setup
What it needs
- no GPU
- Docker
- Needs Exa API (hosted MCP at mcp.exa.ai), Exa API key or OAuth for higher limits and Exa Agent
