Overview
Encore is an infrastructure SDK for Go and TypeScript where databases, Pub/Sub topics, buckets, caches, cron jobs and secrets are declared in application code. `encore run` starts the app locally with Postgres, NSQ, Redis, tracing and a dashboard at localhost:9400. An optional commercial platform provisions the matching resources in your AWS or GCP account, or you can build a Docker image and supply your own infrastructure.
Who it is for: Go and TypeScript teams building backends on AWS or GCP
Strengths
- Same code runs locally with real Postgres, Pub/Sub and Redis, and deploys to AWS or GCP
- SDK and CLI work without the paid platform; `encore build docker` supports self-hosting
- Generates rules files for Cursor and Claude Code and runs a local MCP server
- Local dashboard shows traces, APIs, databases and Pub/Sub messages
Weaknesses
- Only Go and TypeScript are supported; Python and Rust are early-access only
- Automated provisioning covers AWS and GCP only; Azure is on the roadmap
- Preview environments, approvals and managed provisioning need the commercial platform
- Application code depends on the Encore SDK and its resource declarations
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Postgres, NSQ, Redis, AWS or Google Cloud (for deployment)
- port 9400
