Overview
Tambo is a React SDK plus backend for generative UI. You register components with Zod schemas, and the agent chooses one and streams its props to it. The backend runs the LLM loop and conversation state, supports MCP servers and browser-side tools, and works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral, Cerebras or OpenAI-compatible providers. Tambo Cloud shuts down October 31, 2026, so new use means self-hosting.
Who it is for: React developers adding agent-driven generative UI to their apps
Strengths
- Zod-schema components become LLM tool definitions; props stream to the UI
- Supports MCP tools, prompts, elicitations and sampling
- Browser-side local tools can touch the DOM or React state
- SDK and backend are MIT; some workspaces such as apps/api are Apache-2.0
Weaknesses
- Hosted Tambo Cloud closes October 31, 2026; user data is deleted November 30
- New signups are closed, and the team has moved on to a different product
- React only; no other frontend frameworks are mentioned
- Self-hosted resource needs are not given in the README
What it needs
- no GPU
- Compose
- Needs LLM provider API key
- Models: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, Cerebras
