Overview

Open-Sora is a text-to-video and image-to-video generation project that publishes model checkpoints, inference scripts and training code. The latest release, Open-Sora 2.0, has 11B parameters, and the README reports a training cost of about $200K and VBench results comparable to HunyuanVideo (11B) and Step-Video (30B). Earlier versions (1.0 to 1.3) are kept on separate branches, and a Hugging Face Spaces Gradio demo is linked.

Who it is for: Researchers and engineers running or training open video generation models

Strengths

  • Checkpoints and training code released together, with a stated ~$200K training cost for 2.0
  • Supports text-to-video, image-to-video and video-to-video in earlier versions (1.1 documented)
  • Includes a video data processing pipeline and technical reports for each version
  • Apache-2.0 license; Hugging Face Spaces demo and sample gallery available

Weaknesses

  • Last tagged release is 2025-02-21, before the 2.0 announcement in March 2025
  • No Docker or compose files detected
  • Hardware requirements are not stated in the visible README; 11B model likely needs a large GPU
  • Older versions live on separate branches with different checkpoints and instructions

What it needs

  • GPU required
  • Needs ColossalAI
  • Models: Open-Sora 2.0 (11B), Open-Sora 1.3 (1B), Open-Sora 1.2, Open-Sora 1.1, Open-Sora 1.0
