Overview
Trellis is an npm CLI that writes a `.trellis/` directory into your repo holding specs, task PRDs and per-developer journals, then injects the relevant context into coding agent sessions. It runs a four-phase loop (plan, implement, verify, finish) using skills and sub-agents, and generates platform-specific files for 22 AI coding platforms.
Who it is for: Teams using AI coding agents who want shared, persistent project standards
Strengths
- Specs, tasks and journals are plain files in the repo, reviewable like code
- Same .trellis structure generated for 22 coding platforms, not just Claude Code
- Verify step runs lint, type-check and tests against specs and self-fixes
- Per-developer journals stay separate while shared specs live in git
Weaknesses
- AGPL-3.0 license may be a problem for some company use
- Requires both Node.js >= 18 and Python >= 3.9
- Needs upfront effort to write or draft specs to get value
- No tagged release listed; versions only via npm
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Node.js >= 18, Python >= 3.9
