Overview

OpenSkills installs Anthropic-format SKILL.md skills from GitHub, private git repos or local paths into .claude/skills or .agent/skills. It writes the same <available_skills> XML that Claude Code uses into AGENTS.md, and agents load a skill on demand with `npx openskills read <name>`. This lets Cursor, Windsurf, Aider, Codex and other agents that read AGENTS.md use the same skills.

Who it is for: Developers sharing Claude-style skills across Cursor, Codex and Aider

Strengths

  • Same SKILL.md format and folder layout as Claude Code, so skills are portable
  • Skills load on demand through a shell command, keeping context small
  • Installs from GitHub, private git URLs or local paths; project-local by default
  • No server or MCP support needed; runs via npx

Weaknesses

  • Agents must run shell commands to load skills; no native Skill tool
  • Requires Node.js 20.6+ and Git
  • Skill sourcing is limited to git repos and local paths; no separate registry
  • Detected license is NOASSERTION, though the README states Apache 2.0

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Node.js 20.6+, Git
