Overview
Mistral Vibe is a Python CLI that lets Mistral models read, edit and search a codebase and run shell commands from a chat prompt. It has approval-based agent profiles (ask, plan, accept-edits, auto-approve), subagents via a task tool, skills, slash commands and MCP server configuration. A programmatic mode (-p) adds limits on turns, cost, tokens and time, with JSON output and exit codes for scripting.
Who it is for: Developers who want a scriptable terminal coding agent using Mistral models
Strengths
- Scriptable -p mode with --max-turns, --max-price, --max-tokens, --time-limit and defined exit codes
- Agent profiles control approvals: ask, plan (read-only), accept-edits (default), auto-approve
- Supports subagents, custom skills, slash commands, MCP servers and custom agent files
- Trust-folder prompt guards against running in unvetted directories
Weaknesses
- Officially supports UNIX only; Windows works but is not a target
- Built around Mistral's models; other provider support is not stated in the visible README
- Needs a modern terminal emulator; older terminals may render badly
- Some features are experimental, such as --agent-socket
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Python 3.12+, Mistral API key, uv (Windows install)
- Models: Mistral models, Mistral Medium 3.5 (vision)
