Overview
Forge is a Rust CLI coding agent that reads files, writes patches and runs commands from an interactive TUI, a one-shot `-p` mode, or a ZSH plugin using a `:` prefix. It ships three agents (forge, sage, muse) and supports custom agents, SKILL.md skills, AGENTS.md instructions, MCP configuration and AI-written commit messages. Provider credentials are set with `forge provider login`.
Who it is for: Developers who want an AI coding agent in the terminal or ZSH prompt
Strengths
- Three usage modes: interactive TUI, one-shot `-p` for scripts, and `:` prefix ZSH plugin
- Built-in read-only (sage) and planning (muse) agents alongside the implementing agent
- Custom agents, skills and commands defined as files at project or global level
- `--sandbox` creates an isolated git worktree and branch for experiments
Weaknesses
- Semantic search sends file content to api.forgecode.dev unless a server URL is set
- Installed via a `curl | sh` script; no Docker or compose files detected
- Full list of supported providers and models is not in the visible README
- Plugin workflow requires ZSH; other shells get only the CLI
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs LLM provider API credentials, ZSH (for plugin mode), git
- Models: OpenAI, Anthropic, other LLM providers
