Overview

dev-browser runs JavaScript scripts against a persistent Chrome instance through a warm local daemon, so an agent can navigate, snapshot, act and verify across separate calls. Pages are real Puppeteer objects with added helpers such as accessibility-tree snapshots with element refs. It can launch an isolated profile or attach to an existing browser over CDP, and also exposes an MCP server and an installable agent skill.

Who it is for: Developers giving Claude Code, Codex or similar agents browser control

Strengths

  • Named tabs persist between scripts, so agents keep page state across calls
  • Snapshots return accessibility trees with refs like e12 usable in Puppeteer selectors
  • Can launch an isolated profile or attach via port, HTTP, WebSocket or CDP socket
  • Ships a CLI, MCP server and skill installer for Codex, Claude and generic agents

Weaknesses

  • Windows and musl Linux are not supported
  • Scripts run in node:vm, which the README says is not a security sandbox
  • Version 1.0 breaks 0.2 scripts; snapshotForAI and page.cua helpers are removed
  • Scripts sharing a named page can still interleave

What it needs

  • no GPU
  • Needs Chrome or Chromium
