Overview
DESIGN.md defines a file format with YAML front matter for design tokens (colors, typography, rounded, spacing, components) and markdown prose for rationale. The TypeScript CLI, run with npx, lints files for broken token references and WCAG contrast, diffs two versions, and exports tokens to Tailwind v3/v4 and W3C DTCG. The format is at version alpha.
Who it is for: Teams giving coding agents a consistent design system to follow
Strengths
- Lint output is structured JSON with a non-zero exit code on errors, usable in CI
- Eleven lint rules cover broken refs, WCAG AA contrast, section order and typos
- Exports to Tailwind v3 JSON, Tailwind v4 CSS @theme and W3C DTCG tokens
- Also usable as a library via the @google/design.md/linter import
Weaknesses
- Format is marked alpha; the README warns the spec and schema will change
- Only a fixed set of component properties is valid; others produce warnings
- Sections must appear in a fixed order, otherwise the linter warns
- Windows needs the designmd alias because of the .md bin name collision
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Node.js, npm
