Overview
bd (Beads) is a Go CLI that stores tasks as a dependency graph in a Dolt database, replacing markdown TODO lists for coding agents. Agents use commands such as bd ready, bd update --claim and bd close, with JSON output and hash-based IDs to avoid merge collisions. bd setup installs hooks and instructions for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others; sync runs through Dolt remotes on a git remote.
Who it is for: Developers running coding agents who need persistent, multi-agent task tracking
Strengths
- Hash-based IDs (bd-a1b2) avoid merge collisions across agents and branches
- Embedded Dolt mode needs no separate database server
- bd setup installs integrations for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Factory and more
- Works without git via BEADS_DIR and --stealth, including non-git VCS
Weaknesses
- Embedded mode is single-writer; concurrent writers need an external dolt sql-server
- HTTP backend is marked experimental and diverges from local behavior in documented ways
- Upgrades across schema migrations need a designated clone to migrate and push
- issues.jsonl is only an export, not a backup; sync relies on Dolt remotes
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Dolt (embedded by default; external dolt sql-server for server mode), git remote (optional, for sync)
